Confession (The Sacrament of Reconciliation)

'When Jesus had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained". [John 20:22-23]

After he had risen from the dead, Jesus Christ gave his Apostles (the priests and bishops of the Church) the authority and power to grant absolution (forgiveness) for sins.

The way this is done by a person making a confession of their sins to a priest and the priest giving advice and absolution - that sure forgiveness of God.

The sacrament of reconciliation is not meant to be something scary, nor is it a punishment, but rather a way in which God shows us he loves us by telling us we are forgiven.

The priest is bound to absolute confidentially to what he hears in the confessional - he may not repeat it in any circumstance.
